Your Product Isn’t the Interface Anymore

Let’s be blunt: your lovingly crafted SaaS interface just got demoted from “primary experience” to “implementation detail.” Google’s new AI-native laptop platform makes that official.

Last week, Google unveiled Googlebook, a laptop line built around Gemini as the core interaction layer, pitched as the long-term successor to Chromebooks. Instead of “apps first,” the system leans on AI-powered interactions like Magic Pointer, contextual recommendations, proactive task assistance, and Gemini-generated widgets wired into the OS. In parallel, Google DeepMind showed prototypes of an AI-enhanced cursor that can follow natural-language commands and context—grabbing ingredients from a recipe into a shopping list or booking a restaurant directly from a video.

Read that again: the OS is learning to use software on the user’s behalf.

This isn’t just a cool demo reel. It’s a fundamental change in who your real user is. Historically, you designed for a human clicking through your onboarding, your dashboards, your pricing modals. Now you’re increasingly designing for two audiences: the human and the agent sitting between the human and your product.

If you keep designing as if you still control the entry point, you’re going to lose.

When the OS behaves like an AI concierge, three things happen at once:

  • Discovery moves up a layer: instead of users “opening your app,” they ask Gemini to “create a report,” “optimize my campaign,” or “sort these invoices.” Your product becomes one of several possible tools behind that intent.
  • Flows get shortcut: agents don’t care about your storytelling sequence. They care about the minimal set of actions to satisfy the user’s goal, executed safely and idempotently.
  • UX mistakes are amplified: brittle flows, ambiguous labels, and side-effect-heavy actions are no longer just bad UX; they’re landmines for autonomous agents clicking on behalf of thousands of users.

For AI startup founders, the risk isn’t just “we need a Gemini app too.” It’s that you’re still thinking in pages and screens while the ecosystem is standardizing around intents and actions.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: your product needs to become legible to machines, not just attractive to humans.

That means:

  • Clear, atomic actions (“create invoice,” “generate summary,” “approve refund”) instead of vague catch-all buttons.
  • Predictable outcomes and reversibility, so an OS-level agent isn’t afraid to call your functions because the blast radius is unknown.
  • Data structures and naming that map cleanly to natural-language intents (“summarize my customer support conversations from last week”) rather than only your internal jargon.

In that world, your UI is basically documentation plus guardrails around a verbs-and-objects layer that agents can orchestrate.

This is not science fiction. Google is explicitly positioning Googlebook as AI-native hardware where Gemini drives contextual recommendations and proactive assistance across apps. DeepMind is literally experimenting with a cursor that handles multi-step tasks by understanding the screen and user intent, not your sitemap. The direction of travel is clear: operating systems are becoming opinionated about workflows.

So what should you actually do this month—not “someday after the fundraise”?

Here’s one concrete, brutally practical move:

Define and ship an “agent-facing” action layer for your product.

Pick the 5–10 highest-value jobs users hire you for (generate a proposal, triage leads, reconcile payouts, whatever). For each one:

  1. Break it into a small number of clear, idempotent actions with simple inputs and outputs.
  2. Make those actions callable through a clean API or internal abstraction that doesn’t depend on your UI choreography.
  3. Rewrite your in-product flows to compose those same actions, so your human-facing UX and your future agent-facing integrations share the same backbone.

You’re not doing “AI integrations” yet; you’re making your product legible to the next generation of operating systems. When Gemini, Remy, ChatGPT, or some future agent wants to help your user, they should find obvious, safe hooks—rather than reverse-engineering your UI like a clumsy RPA bot.
