Figma didn’t just ship “more AI” this month. It quietly turned your design file into an API your agents can read from, write to, and push back into code—and most early-stage teams are still treating Figma like a glorified moodboard.
In the May 2026 release notes, Figma doubled down on agentic workflows: custom skills in Make (markdown instructions that encode your team’s conventions and repeated workflows), deeper MCP integration so agents can translate code into Figma designs and back, and the /figma-use “write to canvas” skill that lets an AI agent create and modify live Figma files using your components, variables, and styles. In plain English: your design system is now executable by software that doesn’t get tired, doesn’t get bored, and will happily generate a hundred flows that look “on brand” but may be completely misaligned with your product strategy.
That’s the real story here—not that Figma added yet another AI chat box, but that design tools are becoming programmable surfaces for agents. If you’re an AI startup founder, this is either a massive unfair advantage or the fastest way to ship an incoherent UX at scale.
From “helpful assistant” to autonomous UX executor
The MCP server and skills model mean an agent can now: capture your running prototype from code into structured Figma frames, generate new screens using your real design system, and then push updated tokens and components back into your codebase. Combine that with Make’s custom skills—plain text recipes for “how we build dashboards,” “how we onboard users,” or “how we design pricing pages”—and you’ve effectively hired a tireless junior product team that never saw your roadmap.
The optimistic pitch is obvious: faster iterations, fewer handoffs, more time for “strategy.” The uncomfortable reality is that most early-stage products don’t have strategy encoded anywhere except in the founder’s head and a couple of Notion docs. If your AI agent only sees a messy Figma file, an inconsistent “design system,” and zero written UX principles, it will do exactly what it’s supposed to: extrapolate your chaos.
Design systems just became founder infrastructure, not design hygiene

- A short UX principle doc (one page) spelling out non‑negotiables: what success looks like, what’s forbidden (dark patterns, misleading CTAs), and which metrics matter.
- A minimal design system slice in Figma: the actual components, tokens, and patterns that should be reused for this flow—nothing more.
- One Figma Make custom skill, written in plain text, that encodes how to build this flow using your components and principles (e.g., “/build-onboarding-flow”).
Then, and only then, let an agent touch that part of the product. Have it generate a few variants directly on the canvas via your MCP setup, review them as a team, and ship the one that best aligns with your principles.
